Television Comings & Goings

April 2nd, 2009 · No Comments · Television, advertising

Good old Chuck Dickens came up with a pretty good paragraph to describe what the global economy is going through right now. We do have to wonder, though, whether he should have gone into politics — the paragraph we have in mind (from The Tale Of Two Cities) does a darned good job of planting its feet firmly on both sides of the fence simultaneously:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Television is a fine example of this “Good News/Bad News” scenario:

  • Good: Comedy Central launches on Sky
  • Bad: Alt TV closes down
  • Good: TV3 launches its “TV3 Plus One” delayed broadcast channel on Freeview
  • Bad: Triangle Television closes down its Wellington community channel
  • Good: TVNZ restores full coverage to its regional advertising breakouts on Television One
  • Bad: TVNZ removes regional advertising entirely from TV2
  • Good: TVNZ makes TVNZ6 and TVNZ7 available on Sky
  • Bad: Without exclusive content such as TVNZ6 and TVNZ7, Freeview loses some of its leverage
  • Good: Television One and TV2 will now be available in High Definition on MySky HDi
  • Bad: FreeviewHD loses its exclusivity as sole outlet for Television One and TV2 in HD
  • Good: deals to be had on television advertising
  • Bad: reduced ad revenue forces staff cutbacks

You get the idea. Glass half empty and half full. It’s that sort of world.
